What is Office 2003 Gold? Is this just the first release?

When an Office program goes from beta (test) phase
to product phase, the released version is sometimes
referred to as the (good as) 'gold' release, the
one that the retail product will use, but even the
'announced' gold release can be replaced by an updated
one before it is replicated for retail sale.
