what is Outlook.exe process that keeps running

I'm using OL2000 on an XP machine. When I quit Outlook, there is a process
that keeps running, Outlook.exe. My guess is it keeps receiving email when
I'm not in Outlook. I don't need that and it seems to complicate things when
I need to shut communications programs down,
