what is pure virtual function called

I encountered the "pure virtual function called" message everytime i do a
print preview in Excel and Word application. When i clicked ok another
message "illegal operation" and automatically shut down the application.
Please help me how to overcome this problem.

I'm using Office 2000 and window 98 SE. Thanks.

I'm not sure any of these are actually relevant, but here's what I located

Do you have Norton Antivirus installed?

I only have McAfee Virus Scan installed. I only encountered this pure virtual
function called problem after i started editing excel file sent by my
Japanese counterpart using MS office Japanese version. Is this the root cause
of the problem/

Could be. Sounds plausible, anyway.

Seriously, Office 2000 was even worse than recent versions when it comes to
handling multiple languages, so it wouldn't surprise me. But I can't say for
sure.

Have you tried running Help/Detect and Repair?
