WHAT IS THE ASPNET_CLIENT FOR IN fp2003?

The aspnet_client is not part of FrontPage, it's part of and used by IIS ( Internet
Information Services )
Ignore it.

Thank you. Now for the problem I am having.

I design and implement websites using FrontPage2003. One of those sites got
seriously messed up yesterday (July 16) when the client made some changes and
then tried to publish them. She clicked on “Yes to All†when asked about
replacing or deleting some file (she doesn’t recall what the message said).
I tried to restore the website using my copy, but with no success. During
publishing I receive this message:

Server error: Cannot open file “SmartNav.htm†for writing.

SmartNav.htm is a file in the aspnet_client folder. What we get when going
to the URL is the Listing of Directory: /sylsibes/images/, which is a listing
of most of the .gifs and .jpgs in the images folder in FP2003. The URL is
http://www.arlington-siberians.com. I have posted this problem to an MS
discussion group but have not received any responses. Do you have any
suggestions as to what could be causing this problem and how it can be fixed?
Or can you direct me to a resource that can help me?

Open the web and recalculate hyperlinks and then publish.

If that doesn't work, go here: http://www.95isalive.com/fixes/fpclean.htm
and download a copy of FP Cleaner.
Links are at the bottom of the page.
Run the functions that clear the hidden temporary files and the hidden *.web files.

Then recalculate again and try publishing.

I tried everything you suggested and still get the exact same results. What
other options are available to me?

The aspnet_client directory is created when asp.net is applied to a web
server. Usually this is done when the .net framework is installed. I'm not
aware of a config utility that could be used to add the aspnet_client files
back. You could contact the server host and ask them if they could copy the
aspnet_client directory from another installation into this one. Afterwars,
you could have them set this directory up as a virtual directory (so it
wouldn't get seen by FrontPage) or turn it into it's own FrontPage web
(though I'm unsure if this would afect any of the .Net functionality.

Thanks Mark. The host support person is 100% non-responsive. Is there a way
to move this website to a new host and get this problem removed as part of
that move?

Ok,
You'll need to have your hosting company check the file on the server.
I can't think of anything your client could have done to mess it up, but.......

On both the server and your local host convert the aspnet_client folder to a subweb
- then publish the root and don't include subwebs
