No, under the WinXP Add/Remove Programs list, it lists the Customizable
Alerts as 4095mbs.

Well, that sounds very suspicious (and very obese). Office is usually around
400 mb and you're showing a program that clocks in at 10 times that?

FWIW, Customizable Alerts does not appear on the Add/Remove Program list on
either of my WinXP machines (one Pro, one Home) (Office XP and 2003 in use).
All updates, etc. installed for both Win and Office.

"Customizable Alerts" is a popular phrase (per a web search).

It may well be that whatever you are looking at is not Microsoft's
Customizable Alerts (and even if it is, 4095 mb?!)

When you select/highlight it under Add/Remove programs: 1) does it indicate
that it is removable? 2) is there a "Click here for support information"
link? Where does it go?

Under the Win XP Add/Remove programs, it is removable - under the highlight
of more 'support information' this takes me to the microsoft site.
