What is the next database program from MS?

N

Nocturnal

From what I understand, the next Office Suite will not come with Access as
MS is doing away with Access. What will replace Access?

Care to nominate a source for this rumour?

AFAIK, the next next Office Suite will contain the next version of Access.
And given that Access is the best-selling database program *ever*, it would
suprise me greatly if that changed.

This might help allay your fears:

To add to what Steve and Allen said...

Office 2003 comes with Access version 11. (Check the about box.)

Access 11 will be replaced in the next version of Office ??? with Access
version 12.

You may wish to change your sources of rumours to more reliable ones :)

Access is not going anywhere.

Where did you ever get the idea that "MS is doing away with Access"? Access
has more users than all other databases. That alone ensures at least 2 or 3
more versions.

I agree with you, BUT considering what they did to
VB 'Classic' can anyone really be sure about the
lifetimes of any MS product?

Rubbish.

This is not public knowledge, but Microsoft and I have an agreement.
Due to the NDA I cannot reveal the specifics, but in essence Microsoft
is well aware that if they discontinue making Access I will have to be
committed to a funny farm. Microsoft does not want this added expense,
as well as the bad publicity, so rest assured that Access will be around
for a long time.

MS have faithfully promised me that as long as I don't wear
my cooking foil hat in public and don't claim to be Bill
Gates long lost evil twin then Access' future is assured...

Damn! That's my weekend's trashed now.... :)

Whoever told you that MS is doing away with Access was simply and
purely wrong. It's NOT TRUE; the next version is currently under
active development.

We do know that historically MS actively supports a product for at least 5
years after it's last release. VB6 was released in the middle of 1998, so
that is even longer. That would mean that Office VBA will be supported at
least until the end of 2008. The next version of Office is due sometime next
year, so that would extend it even further.

Additionally, VBA is licensed out to some 100 or so other companies. For
instance, I use VBA to program AutoCAD extensions for Excel and Access. The
last version of AutoCAD came out last year, so that means at least 2009.
Microsoft would permanently lose many valuable business partners if they
discontinued VBA without providing a full alternative and backward
compatibility. I suspect they will lose substantial business relationships
from their VB6 decision too, but nowhere near as many as with VBA.

I also believe that there is a large team at Microsoft working on the next
version of Access, and for that matter, other Office products as well. In
fact, I'd be willing to place a substantial bet that Access will be in the
next version of Office. Since, as an MVP, I can't say anything specific,
you'll just have to take a chance that my guesses are accurate enough to
warrant that bet. Of course, if you'd like to take me up on it, just post
back and I'll let you know where to wire my winnings. <g>

Real Americans use Aluminum (and spell it right) and call it tin-foil.

Truthfully I heard this from a teacher of mine LOL. I guess I shouldn't
trust what he says or take it with a grain of salt.

The Access product team is alive and actively working to make the next
great Access version.
