What is the purpose of the drawing canvas? What good is it?

I find the drawing canvas irritating and am hoping someone can tell me how to
benefit from using it.

In some versions of Word, connectors are available only in a drawing canvas.
The drawing canvas also corrals drawing objects and text boxes and allows
them to be scaled all together just by scaling the canvas.

Considering that the drawing canvas confers some benefit, but only
when you're planning to do certain kinds of operations (using
connectors, grouping and resizing drawing objects), it's generally a
good idea to go to Tools > Options > General and turn off the option
"Automatically create drawing canvas when inserting AutoShapes".
Whenever you do want to use one, click Insert > Picture > New Drawing.
