What is the significance of text1, text2...

I need to add columns with different ad-hoc labels to my project plan. As I
do so I need to declare the FieldName as a text and I get to select Text1,
Text2, etc. and then the title.

Do I need to use different text numbers (text1, text2...) or can I just use
Text1 all the way through? I notice that the system does accept the use of
Text1 across multiple columns, and one can the use the 'Title' field to labe
the columns differently.

But I suppose that the Text1, Text2.... exist for a reason -- what is that,
then?
