What is wrong with formula?

I need a formula to count how many dates in the list are for 8/1, 8/2, etc.
I tried COUNTIF(A1:A5,=b1) and get 0 value

=COUNTIF(A1:A5,B1)

You don't need the =B1, it is just B1
