What makes a template into an addin?

I want to distribute a bunch of macros to a group of users. I know the
template needs to be in the startup folder. Is that what makes a
template an addin? Or do I need to change the template in some way in
addition to putting it in Startup? I've read several discussions about
the different *uses* of templates vs. addins, but I can't find a
simple explanation of how they're different inside. A link or tip
would be appreciated.

A Template in your StartUp folder *is* an AddIn or Global Template; you
don't have to change anything. There are other types of AddIns (COM AddIns).
There are no other types of Template, just other uses for Templates.
Although, typically, Global templates may contain different elements from
Templates used to base Documents on, they have the same format and it is how
they are opened that is significant.
