What should I do if this is really spamming from ME?

Bill Weylock

The (edited to remove addresses and names) message below was in my mailbox
this morning. It would appear that my computer was used to send a spam
message to an address at yahoo.

Is there any other interpretation (which I would love to hear)?

If not, what should I do to make sure I¹m not being used? Oddly, I just last
night ran a full (5 hours) scan of my hard drive with NAV. I don¹t think I
have any viri.

Thanks!

There is nothing wrong with your computer. Someone who has a Windows
computer has a virus. They have your address in their address book. The
virus sends mail messages out to people in the address book and makes
one of them the from address. In this case it happened to be you. One of
the recipients had an auto-reply message, so it was sent to the from
address (yours).

Thanks.

That's exactly what I wanted to hear. I couldn't imagine how it could
happen.

Hope within a year they will make all email traceable.

Thanks again, Matty.

Best,

Looks like someone (or an infected Windows computer) is spoofing your
address. Spammers and viruses do that. Windows worms and viruses attack
the Windows address book and send mail as people listed in the address book.
Spammers do it to cover their tracks and not get millions of bounced
messages back to their inbox.
