What to do with Resource unavailability?

We have just deployed MS Project Server 2003 and resources are updating when
they will be unavailable. We are aware that these are only notifications and
we now need to take steps to ensure that these resources are actually not
scheduled for work on that time. A method that we are aware of to do this
would be to actually edit the resource's calendar for non-working time. Is
there another (easier) way of doing this? How does everyone else handle this
issue?

Thanks for any help!

To handle the reporting of nonworking time, you basically have only two
options in Project Server 2003:

1. Use the built-in administrative projects option which enters nonworking
time on tasks in the administrative project but does not add the nonworking
time to the resource's calendar in the Enterprise Resource Pool (and thus,
does not reschedule project work based on the unavailability of the resource
during the nonworking time period).

or

2. Develop a company methdology for reporting vacation to the Enterprise
Resource Pool administrator, who will then manually enter the nonworking
time on each resource's calendar in the Enterprise Resource Pool. Several
companies I have worked with use this approach, which requires resources to
get the formal approval of their vacation time from the appropriate manager,
and then the resources send an e-mail to the Enterprise Resource Pool
manager who enters the time on their calendars.

Unfortunately, there is no default method within Project Server 2003 to
accomplish #2. Hope this helps.
