what versions of excel and office work on windows ME

All versions up to office XP (2002) should work.

The first version that don't work on win98 and winME is office 2003....

Most of them, but not well. Windows ME is a poor excuse for an operating
system and was pushed out as a product to use as an iterim to getting
Windows XP finished and delivered. It's probably the only Microsoft OS that
I've never used, although I did buy it and tried unsuccessfully to upgrade a
Windows 98 SE system. I'm sure you can get more specific answers in a
Windows newsgroup. This newsgroup is devoted to Microsoft Access databases.
