What was the name of the file I just put in Word?

It seems to me that if I insert a file into a doc, then it is not
possible to find the name in the file. Is that true?

Correct, unless you inserted it as a link, in which case you shoudl be able
to see the file path in the INCLUDETEXT field code if you press Alt+F9.
