what will you do for unrecognized charectors appearing in the word

2003 microsft word. i have unrecognized charector ( appear like a Pie sign)
appear in the beginning of each sentence as i type anything with 2003 word. i
tried hard to get rid of by deleting everytime, still does not go! what
should i do?
