Does anyone know what "conversion issues" this update fixes?:

The only clues in the above link are:

1) A vague statement about what it fixes:
"This update fixes conversion issues that occur with Word documents."

2) The file information: File name File version File size Date
Size
Wwlib.dll 12.00.6015.5000 17,400,688 30-Mar-2007 22:13


3) Buried under the heading "Information for administrators about .msp files
", there's a link:
922850 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/922850/) You receive an error
message when you try to open or to save a file in one of the 2007
Office programs or in one of the Office 2003 programs

922850 is not related to .msp files, and I'm pretty sure it's not
related to 934173 either.

Hi Julie,

The "conversion issues" occurs under specific environment.

Based on my research in the related KB article, the conversion issues
should refer that the 2007 Microsoft Office system converters convert the
Office binary format files into the Office Open XML format. This process
helps remove the potential threat that may exist if the document is opened
in the binary format. If there is problem with the conversion (for example,
you are unable to use MOICE to convert the Word document), we can install
the update to fix it.

KB922850 is one of the "Related Resources". You can find it in the end of
the download webpage for the Word 2007 update KB934173.

I can't seem to get anything but vague answers like "Word 2007 might not able
or incorrectly to open some files saved by previous Office versions via
Compatibility pack correctly" and " If there is problem with the conversion
(for example,
you are unable to use MOICE to convert the Word document)". But WHAT DO
"INCORRECTLY OPEN" AND "UNABLE TO CONVERT THE WORD DOCUMENT" REALLY MEAN?

I want to know:

1) What are the symptoms of the problems that 934173 fixes? Does it occur
only when converting files with MOICE, or can it also occur when using the
Office Button / Convert or Office Button / Save as?
2) When the symptoms do occur, what happens? What are the actual
error/informational messages?
3) How will I know that definitely need the 934173 update? Does something
SPECIFIC and IDENTIFIABLE stop functioning properly? What are the SPECIFIC
CLUES?

Also, your answer is different from another Microsoft person's answer
regarding KB922850 are different.

Are they related? If they are.... HOW ARE THEY SPECIFICALLY RELATED???

I got this escalation from Donald Huang, who is our Online Concierge
Customer Service Representative. Based on my understanding, you want to know
what’s fixed in deed by Hotfix KB934173, am I right?

I double confirmed this issue with Office development team. You are correct
that reference in KB934173 to KB922850 makes no sense. I apologize for the
mistake in online content and will submit a change request to online content
team for updating it. Thank you very much for your great feedback. It does
help our continuous improvement on customer service.

Regarding your question, the office team confirmed that KB934173 is supposed
to fix issues related to compatibility pack that enable Word 2003
applications to open/save documents for Word 2007. In the past, there are
some issues with Compatibility Pack (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923505/)
that Word 2007 might not able or incorrectly to open some files saved by
previous Office versions via Compatibility pack correctly, and the KB934173
is intended to fix this problem. I will follow up with online content team to
ensure that the KB articles are correct.
