what's the best software for creating a book with digital images?

I'm writing a book for my daughter and including digital images (photos)
along with text. I have been using Microsoft Word, however I'm wondering if
it's the most appropriate software to use. Specifically, can Word handle the
amount of data involved in this type of project, or should I be using another
program (perhaps Publisher)? At present, I have written 36 pages and
included several images creating a file that is 74 MB. I'm worried it will
not run as efficiently as I add pages & images.

Any input would be appreciated.

I would suggest you talk to your printer and ask him which file formats he
accepts. Then you can make your decision.

You should never admit publicly that you talk to your printer.. it is only
an HP 5150 and has no feelings of its own,, certainly none that could be
aligned with human feelings.. :)

How did you know that I have a 5150? (Yes, I really do.) However, my human
printer is Neil and he's a terrific printer. Gets all of my business.
Anything I have to do for the guild goes to him. :)

My other printer doesn't have a name - just sits there quietly with its
little green light.

Like remembering your first 7 digit phone number? 843-1248. It was 31248
until about 1964.
