What's the difference between Links, AddIns and References

If one is switching between two XLA spreadsheets. Can someone explain
to me the difference between:

(1) using "Edit -> Links" menu item,
(2) changing the "Add-In" in the "Tools -> Add-Ins" item?
(3) references in Excel VBA

Why does Excel need all of these?
