whay does Microsoft Outlook download each email several times?

Unfortunately, my Microsoft Outlook 2007, downloads each email several times
and it result in wasting time and hard space, as well as difficulty in
following up of my new emails. Please help me resolving this problem.

Does the send/receive cycle end successfully each time or is there an error
shown? I'm curious because there are times when the send/receive process
ends poorly resulting in messages being retrieved more than once.
