When doing an Open wierd characters and blank file names

Hi,
Running Word 97 sr2b. When in Word and doing an "Open as" the filenames
are either ????? or sometimes blank even though there is a Word icon by the
object.

Ran update virus scan, Rebooted, powered down, Emptied out the temps,
deleted normal.dot, even re-registered Word. It will only do so in Word and
only in Open. If doing a Save as in Word the file names are listed
normally.
Using Windows explorer is fine.

Any ideas on what a fix could be would be appreciated.
