When I delete an e-mail it doesn't go in the Deleted Items folder

How do I find my deleted messages? They used to automatically go to the
Deleted Items folder but at some point I must have changed the settings. Now
only the spam items go into the Deleted Items folder.

Does it disappear from the view or does it get a line through it? As
far as I can tell, there's no setting in Outlook that would make it
permanently delete an item and bypass the Deleted Items folder.
