When I Press the FAX tab in options menu, outlook closes completel

I recently formatted my HDD about 4 times because of XP SP2 problems. Now, i
have those problems fixed and everytime i open the send fax, symantec fax
installs then states i need to reload outlook. i reload outlook and nothing
happens. i press options tab, then fax tab, and swoosh, just like that.
outlook shutsdown all together.

i have tried to reinstall, repair, and reformat. i have a sneaky suspicion
that it is the updates (sp3) creating this problem.

You would want to include your Outlook version and fax software with your
post.
If I understand you, your claim is that Outlook is looking for a fax program
even thought you've never installed fax software on your newly reformatted
hard drive? Hard to understand. You've left out important information.

No sir. I have a fresh installation of ms 0ffice 2000 suite on my newly
reformatted hdd. symantec winfax is now installed and modem has been set up
to send a fax. in fact, now i can send faxes, but when i go to
--->tools--->options--->fax, all MS Outlook windows close. i am trying to
adjust the settings so that i can receive a fax. i am using the version of
winfax (symantec), that came with the suite. Currently I am installing all
new updates to windows (without sp2) so that i can see if that helps. All
updates have been applied to Outlook already.

Uh-oh.
I suspect you mean the dreaded WinFax Starter Edition. That is seriously
outdated software.
Sorry. It never worked, was never supported, and has never been updated. I
strongly doubt it would have a chance on WinXP SP2. We couldn't even get it
to work on Win 98.

Russ,

I figured out my idiotic mistake. I would load symantec winfax as directed
and filled in all of the appropriate fields correctly, except for one. when
the program asked for my fax number i would type in the number correctly and
add a message after the digits explaining how to send the fax. this is not
an appropriate thing to do. this program really does not like it when you do
that. i then realized this problem then rebooted it totally again. now, it
works like a charm. can now send and receive faxes without any probs. i
just wish i could now use my dialer in my contact folder to actually talk
with people over the phone line. i can dial the number, and the call goes
through, but, they cannot hear me and i cannot hear them. if i pick the
phone line at the phone handset, i can have the conversation. i think it
would be nice to do that from the PC though. Thanks for listening. and if
you need help with anything, not that i can provide much, let me know. have
a great day.....

Just confirm that you were really talking about WinFax Starter Edition. I
just want to know that it can still work with Win XP SP2. It is so far out
of date that I've never run into anyone who has tried it.

Outlook uses the Windows Phone dialer. It has no voice modem support. You
need to use your handset.
