when I save a form in word it is converted to a strait word doucment and will
not work as a form again

Well, that's pretty much the way forms should work. You should create the
form as a template and create each new form as a document based on it.
Perhaps the form designer included a FileSave or FileSaveAs macro that
unlinks the form fields?
