When I try to open a word document I get a File conversion window.

I am trying to open 3 word documents that I created and saved. The only
window that opens is a FILE CONVERSION WINDOW. How do I get my document to
open. The documents, for some unknown reason have the symbols ~$ in the
beginning of the file name-have no idea why--HELP

Any document beginning with ~$ is a temporary file. Don't try to open it.

Where ever you saved it. If you can remember the filename, search for it in
Windows Explorer. Don't limit it to doc files just in case you saved it as
something different.

When I do an indepth search, it comes up as a shortcut and of course the
shortcut cannot be found. Do you know what I did to cause these 3 files to
be saved as temporary files?? I'd like to steer clear of doing that again!!
Im assuming I now need to just redo the documents, yes??

I doubt that is the case. It is more likely that the temp files were part of
Word's normal activities. These are usually removed when the document and
Word are correctly closed. That the three temp files are still present and
you cannot find the documents leads me to guess that some serious hiccup
occurred and Word closed without saving the documents at all.
