When I type I get extra characters

Every time I type on my main PC, I get extra characters added in. I am sure
that it is a setup problem but I am beggared if I can find where the drama
lies. Help!

If you have speech recognition installed, ensure your microphone is turned off if you are not using speech input.

Speech input is not active. I have also installed AVG anti-virus and AVG
spyware and they have cleared out 50 possible problems, but no viruses. Any
other clues? Also cranked up the PC today and the problem has gotten worse.
Help!

Sure sounds like a bad keyboard, can you swap it with another one and
see if the problem goes away?

Oops, forgot to say open up Keyboard in control panel and make sure the
settings are correct.

David, I had already checked that all the settings were spot on, but never a
bad thing to check the basics! :) However, it was your more obvious answer
of changing the keyboard that worked! One of the kids must have used it as a
mop!

You are talking to a guy who is rebuilding all his financial
information prior to filing income tax because I had a snack!

Believe it or not.

Here's the story:
I was on line reading the newspaper (I dropped my subscription and read
it on line, I prefer it that way) when suddenly, my browser went back
to the previous page. I went forward and it did for a minute and then
went back again. I closed the browser, started over, had more and
weirder problems. Tried a bunch of stuff and finally tried to reboot,
computer hung up.

I ran repair, did a fixboot and a fixmbr, still wouldn't boot and about
that time I discovered the Ctrl key was locked down solidly by a crumb
of something between it and the Shift key (the shift key may have been
down also). I cleared the problem and found that random bits of every
partition on every hard drive had been destroyed. I couldn't use
Acronis True Image because the partition with the image files were
damaged along with all the rest.

I finally formatted C:\ and re-installed XP, deleted the partition with
the defunct Vista install and began putting things back as they were,
that's when I found all partitions on both drives had one or more bad
folders and/or files.

I will keep my image files on DVD and:

I WILL NOT EAT at the keyboard again!
I WILL NOT EAT at the keyboard again!
I WILL NOT EAT at the keyboard again!
I WILL NOT EAT at the keyboard again!
I WILL NOT EAT at the keyboard again!
Etc. etc. etc.
