When merging address, unit number is blank, Word merges, leaves 1.

As above: when merging (unit#) 101 and (buildingnumber) 5140 and (Streetname)
Smith St, IF the address does not contain a unit number in it (ie: 5140
Smith, rather than 101-5140 Smith):
Word leaves a blank space where the (unit#) field *should* be empty and
ignored.
The end result is that if there is no unit# in a particular address being
merged, the address line is indented one space.

This has been a consistent problem, and I need some help to get this resolved.
Thanks

Use a conditional field eg.

{IF {Mergefield Unit#} <> "" "{Mergefield Unit#}-"}{Mergefield Building
Number}

Thank you very much: I'll work on that 'conditioning' until it works. I
figured it would be conditional (logical) formating, but there is litle
readily available for the layman to work with in terms of help. Your
assistance much appreciated.
