When opening additional files in Excel,previously active file stays active

Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Intel

When I open several files in Excel 08, a file other than the one opened takes precedence. I click on a cell in the file that I most recently opened but, the file that was previously being worked on jumps forward and becomes active instead of the newly opened file that I click on.

It sounds like you're running the OS X Spaces utility & have not yet updated
to Leopard 10.5.7 [which may or may not resolve the problem]. If my guess
is correct either turn Spaces off or apply the 10.5.7 update available here:
