When opening Mail, first message is marked as read

When I open Outlook Mail, it marks the first message (the most recently
received message) as already read, even though I have not yet opened it. I
have missed some important messages because I quickly scan my unread messages
(those still in bold) when I open Outlook Mail. Is there a way to turn off
this option?

What version of Microsoft Outlook are you using? Check under Help > About if
you don't know.

If you're using autopreview to view your mail and have Outlook set to mark a
message read after X amount of seconds, that would be your issue.
