When using the look in feature, down arrow, it locks up the system

The problem seems only to happen when hitting the down arrow in the look in
box when searching for a file. I can go to Windows Explorer and choose the
file and it is fine but when I go to file/open/and choose the look in down
arrow, it seems to hesitate. Does anyone have any ideas about this?

It happens in Word, Excel, Outlook etc?
