where are contacts stored?

due to a problem with my outlook 2003 I have had to import my contacts from
a CSV file. The problem that I have had recently is I had to reformat my pc
and reinstall Outlook but when I imported the backup files there were no
contacts so I had to reinstall them from a CSV file which meant that my most
recent contacts were not in the address book.

I thought that the whole setup , mail settings received mail and contacts
were all importe in one file

Mail, Calendar, Tasks, Contacts, .etc should be stored in a file with a
*.PST extension. This file is generally tucked into a hidden/system
directory under the \documents and settings\<userid> folder structure.

All Outlook data is in one file. Do not import this file. Just copy it and
configure Outlook to reuse it.
The file you need to copy and reuse is your Personal Folders file (*.pst)
It's where all the mail, calendar, contacts etc are stored.
