where are Frontpage graphic files stored

J

Jackshouse

I put all my Frontpage files on a test site need to know where the frontpage
files for the background and the other images are stored so that I can put
them on my test site. Where does Frontpage put those graphics files?

Thanks

T

Tom [Pepper] Willett

They are stored in whatever folder you imported them into before inserting
them on your page and saving.

For example, if you have "image1" stored somewhere on your pc hard drive,
you would File | Import it into your local based web (like into the "images"
folder), then, you would insert it on a page and save it. Then you would
publish your local web to your remote web.

Thanks for the response. I didn't import any files though because I used one
of the pre-set Frontpage themes. When I look in Folders view at the list of
files, one of the folders says "copy of Quadrant" (which is my theme) and
there are a lot of .gif files in that folder. I copied that whole folder
into the test website and the icon changed from being a folder to being an
..html file. I didn't get any of the graphics on my test site. Any other
ideas?

Thanks

If not using FP to Publish, You need to "copy" / upload all _hidden FP folders complete
(_themes w/ its sub folders, and _derived, plus _borders if using shared borders)

That's what I can't figure out. Where are the files that have the information
below?

T

Tom [Pepper] Willett

They are located in the root of the web, like all the other folders. Have
you set up FP to show hidden folders?

Yes, I went under Tools, Site Settings, Advanced, and made sure that the
"show hidden files and folders" box was checked. It is. There are a bunch
of folders listed for my website, but none of them is the "derived" file that
apparently has all the stuff I need in it. Do you have any ideas how I can
find that file?

Some folders will never be viewable from within FP. These folders are managed by the FP during the
publishing operation (File Menu | Publish Web / Site, not when you use Selective Publishing). If you
use a 3rd Party FTP application then you should be able to see them when you select the file to
upload.

No, if the files/folder are within your web folder, you FTP application that you are using to upload
with should display them, or at least you should see them with Windows XP / My Computer.

Just to be clear the live/remote server doesn't have the FP extensions installed, correct?

FP Extensions are not installed on the remote server. The FTP process just
had me drag the files out of Frontpage (from my folders view) and put them
into the "test" site folder. I put all the files in that folder (everything
listed on the folders view of the website I created in FP2003) but there was
not the "derived" folder listed anywhere so I could not drag/copy that to the
test site. I made sure that the "show hidden files and folders" option is
selected.

You need to do this from Windows Explorer / My Computer, not from within FP, as there are certain
folder that will never be seen while in FP. Have you considered using FP to publish to the remote
server via FTP?

FP Extensions are not installed on the remote server. The FTP process just
had me drag the files out of Frontpage (from my folders view) and put them
into the "test" site folder. I put all the files in that folder (everything
listed on the folders view of the website I created in FP2003) but there was
not the "derived" folder listed anywhere so I could not drag/copy that to the
test site. I made sure that the "show hidden files and folders" option is
selected.

No, if the files/folder are within your web folder, you FTP application that you are using to
upload
with should display them, or at least you should see them with Windows XP / My Computer.

Just to be clear the live/remote server doesn't have the FP extensions installed, correct?

:

Some folders will never be viewable from within FP. These folders are managed by the FP
during
the
publishing operation (File Menu | Publish Web / Site, not when you use Selective Publishing).
If
you
use a 3rd Party FTP application then you should be able to see them when you select the file
to
upload.

:

They are located in the root of the web, like all the other folders. Have
you set up FP to show hidden folders?

Hooray! After your post, I went to Windows Exp and told it to show hidden
files and folders, found the pesky file I wanted and copied it to my website!
It did not, however, put the background of the page in. The hit counter
didn't come in either. Any ideas on that? Thanks for the help!

The Hit counter or any other feature/function that requires the FP run-time extensions will only
work when published (File Menu | Publish Web / Site) to a server that has the FP extensions via FP's
http mode.
