where are macros stored in XP?

I need to distribute a simple keyboard macro. In earlier
versions of Word, I simply ran XCOPY in a bat file that
copied either the Normal.dot to user's template folder
and/or GLobal.dot to user's Word startup folder. Neither
of these methods work in XP. The templates are copied
but the macro is not there. HELP !

G'day "viv" <[email protected]>,

Stick them in a custom template that then gets copied into the Word
startup directory.

There is no difference between Word XP's and Word 2003's method of storing
macros, and the method used in recent earlier versions. By default, a macro
recorded from the keyboard is stored in normal.dot -- this is as true in XP
as it was before XP. And, of course, the user can assign the Macro to a
template other than Normal.Dot.

I work on two computers (one at home and one at work); I move Macros and
other customizations back and forth easily by just copying Normal.Dot back
and forth between the two machines.

What you are doing that is causing the copy process to fail I cannot guess.
A copy process can fail under certain circumstances, for example, if the
target or source is open when the process is attempted. You could be
attempting to copy the wrong user's version of Normal.Dot, or be copying it
to the wrong place. Perhaps the template containing the macro had not been
saved to disk prior to being copies. You will need to experiment with this.
But it may help to know that it has nothing to do with whether or not you
are using XP.
