The Extend Selection function is no longer available on the status bar in
Word 2007. However, you can press F8 to invoke Extend Selection. After you
press F8 you'll see "Extend Selection" appear in the status bar and you can
click the button or press ESC to turn Extend Selection off.

You can also add Extend Selection to your Quick Access Toolbar:
- Right-click your Quick Access Toolbar (QAT) and click Customize QAT
- From "Choose commands from" select "Commands not in the Ribbon"
- In the list of available commands locate "Extend Selection", select it,
and then click Add to add it to your QAT

As in previous versions, use one or more presses of the F8 key to turn on
Extended Selection Mode and to extend to the next word, sentence, paragraph, or
story; or press F8 once and then press any letter, number, or punctuation key to
extend to the next occurrence of that character.

The permanent clickable display of EXT in the status bar is gone, but you can
still get an indication of whether extended selection is active. Right-click the
status bar; in the popup menu, put a check mark on "Selection Mode". When
extended selection is active, the status bar will say "Extend Selection", and
clicking that will turn off the mode (same as pressing ESC).

Thank you very much both Jay and Beth: this is exactly what I was looking
for! Consider returning it to the next version. The function is very useful
for long texts.
By the way, why is the date so complicated to insert?
