Where did Microsoft hide the Count Characters option?

R

I can see the number of words in a selection, but I'm using an application
that restricts the number of characters. That was an easy-to-find & use
feature in previous versions of MS Word.

Where is it in MS Word 2007?

Great! Thank you so much. I guess that icon didn't exactly communicate its
intent to me. I thought that was another spell-checker. (Sheesh!)

At my screen resolution it has a label - easier to find that way! :)

Microsoft doesn't plug this enough, but they have an interactive '03 to '07
guide that lets you click the old way so they can show you the new way. It
really helped when I first had to start using '07!

http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/word/HA100744321033.aspx

to use it online and

to download it so you don't have to be online... and they have them for most
of the Office products.

Good luck and have a great weekend!

Along with Review tab, as BoniM noted, also take a look at your Status Bar.
You should see the live count of Words in your document and clicking it will
display the Word Count dialog box.

If you don't see Words: <#> in your Status Bar, right-click the Status Bar
and then click Word Count to add it.

The Live Count will display the number of words (or selected words) in the
document but clicking the command will display the Word Count dialog box
which, as I'm sure you know, provides the character count. It's faster to
access the dialog box using the Status Bar than switching to the Review tab.

Is there any way to determine what position I am in from the left column (ie.
character 25) - other than selecting the characters on the line and pressing
the word count?

I found it. Right click the status bar and select Column

Thanks to Beth.

As Beth said, right-click the status bar at the bottom of the Word window. A
menu will list all the things that can be displayed on the status bar,
although most of them are turned off by default. The one you want is
"Column".

Hi Beth,

I'm hoping you can help me. I used to be able to see the number of words
that I've highlighted in my document by 100/2509, for example, in the status
bar. However, for some reason, now when I highlight a selection of words,
there is no automatic note of the number of words on the status bar. I now
have to click on the word count feature on the status bar to get a word count
of my selection. Is there any way I can "turn on" the automatic feature
again, rather than having to click on word count?

Right-click on the status bar and check "Word Count"...

Hi Gordon,

Actually, Word Count is already checked. Have you any other suggestions?

Is there a way to have Word NOT count periods? For example, I have a table of
contents that must have dots between the heading and the page number. Word
counts the line of periods for each heading as a word. I have only so many
words to use on these briefs so each one counted against me hurts!!

Thanks!

Are you using periods to get the lines of periods or are use setting the tab
leader? With the tab leader, at most, the line of periods would be counted
as one word, however a simple test that I just performed indicates that the
lines of peiods that result from setting the tab leader do not get included
in the word count.

And if you're using a TOC field to generate the TOC, you'll get the
right-aligned tab with period leader as the default.

So basically what she's saying here (forget her "I'm sure you know" comment,
because obviously if you did, you wouldn't be writing here anyway - right? So
basically she's saying double click on the Word Count words and a dialog box
will display showing you the character count in your entire document. Speak
Ease for the little people why don't ya?

As it happens, Beth *was* sure I knew, and I did, and this thread was over
and done with nearly four months ago, so why are you stirring it up again?

Why don't you read the whole thread properly. What was written in Beth's
