Where does Groove Store Data on my PC and can I change the locatio

M

Mark

Can someone tell me where on my hard drive Groove stores my workspace data
and is it possible to change that location?

I would like to store the data on a network drive instead of my C drive so
that the data is backed up automatically. I realize all the users have the
data on their machines, but I would like to retreive the old data if someone
inadvertantly deletes information or a file in the workspace. I don't want to
have to do manual backups on a daily basis either.

Thanks in advance!

Hi Mark,

Before even considering changing the location of storage, please note
that backing up Groove's directories does not enable you to restore
Groove data.

The only ways to restore data is through:
- manual backups of Groove workspaces
- automatic backups of Groove data, using a groove server databridge
("backup"), or other backup solutions for Groove.

But I still want to know where to find the files from a Groove workspace on
my current local Drive C: - where is that secret hidden location?

Obviously I appreciate you answering my question - but it does not appear
correct, based on my computer's information.

With more than 1.9 gig in GROOVE, and all 600 files available to me - I
verified that I don't have a GROOVE folder inside that OFFICE folder you
wrote below. My Office folder there is but 9k in size, and I even screen shot
for proof. Thus, somehow, I must to continue to believe that there is nearly
2gig of files on my drive C, somewhere, which I still don't know the location
of.

I wonder if anyone else has an opinion on this, or at least another method
to determine where the actual, if not official, storage location for GROOVE
is on my XP PRO computer.

Mark,

My answer is for Groove 2007 installed from a Microsoft Volume Licensing
CD.

Maybe you use a different Groove release?
If not, check whether folder options are set to show hidden files and
directories. Groove data folders are hidden for both Groove 3.1 and
Groove 2007...

FYI, Groove 3.1 stores (by default) data on a different location:

XP users :
C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data\Local
Settings\Groove Networks\Groove\

Win NT users :
C:\WINNT\Profiles\[username]\Application Data\Local Settings\Groove
Networks\Groove

Note: Groove 3.1 enables you (during the installation) to define a
different location (local drives only) to store data, whereas Groove
2007 does not propose this possibility.

If it's a standard workspace, the data is here:

C:\Documents and Settings\student\Local Settings\Application
Data\Microsoft\Office\Groove\System\Groovebinaryfilestore.xss_

If it's a file sharing workspace, then the data is wherever you specify the
folder to be. The default is on your desktop.

Dear all,

Actually I have a Groove 2007 version.
My computer crashed, the only other user of our commun workplace cashed his
computer too, and could saved only data stored in the file
"groovebinaryfilestore.xss".
Of course we don't have any back up available.

The question is how to re-use / re-install the groovebinaryfilestore.xss
saved on CD to a new Groove workplace?

So far, I saved under my hard disk at the correct address that file, but I
can't use it in Groove :-(

Please any comment / help will be much appreciated.

Regards,

Thierry

Hi Theirry,

Do you have a file or a directory? There should be a directory called
"Groovebinaryfilestore.xss_" which has sequentially numbered files which
correspond to your Groove data (stored in 1024k chunks).

What do you have saved/backed up - a file or a directory with contents
in it?

Cheers,

Justin

First of all your Groove data is stored in an XML BLOB - which is not usefull
for normal backup or restore. In Windows XP it is stored in the folliowing
Location:

“C:\Documents and Settings \â€aliasâ€\Local Settings\Application
Data\Microsoft\Office\Groove" directory.

In Windows Vista it is stored in “C:\Users\â€aliasâ€\Local
Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Office\Groove" directory.

Groove is a "living" application by which I mean that it is always working
and performing R/W operations to disc and the Groove Account file is always
open which presents difficulties for normal BU routines. Microsoft does not
support installations that do not confrom to the standard install locations
(as above) so your best bet for back up is to use the free tool from our
parners at threewill you can download it free from here:
