Where is the Admin/Moderator for this group?

D

dedawson

Wherever they are, they need to step up and proactively clear the spam
from this board. There is no excuse for the clutter. And no, simply
banning the poster from the group will not work, as its most likely
coming from a botnet.

This group is an extremely valuable resource, and deserves better.

Just my two-cents worth.

Be that as it may, someone created it, and therefore someone has Group
Owner permissions and can delete this garbage. If they're not willing
to do it, they can share those permissions with someone who will.

You're nuts. This is usenet. It is a headless creature, at best.
Perhaps you're viewing a hijacking of it, in someone's web portal? If
so, well, you're getting what you deserve.

D

dedawson

No, I'm not nuts. And I'm accessing via Google groups, not some
hijacked portal.
And, finally, I'm admin on another (granted, less active) Google
group, and when I see junk I delete it.

Newsflash: Google hijacked usenet. Where ya been? This happened long,
long ago, when Deja News went out of business.
And, finally, I'm admin on another (granted, less active) Google
group, and when I see junk I delete it.

Google doesn't own usenet. Do you even know what usenet is?

D

dedawson

No, Google doesn't own Usenet, but when I see an offensive post in my
group, I am able to delete it. Granted it may be the case that it is
only being deleted from what Google shows me and is still visible via
other Usenet providers, but I have my doubts.

I'm assuming you're using a paid service that may well be filtering
all the garbage from what you see. Consider, however, that the
majority of the folks that come here for help are not using a paid
service and are most likely seeing the same junk that I am.

Society: It's about civility.

Actually, no, I'm using a free service...

No filtering on usenet, as I tried already to explain. The crap you're
seeing is only within the webosphere. It's not here.

You really oughta try a real newsreader, if you're interested in
newsgroups. (And, although I pointed you to a website, that's just to
get auth creds for the news server.)

HTH!

D

Hmmm. Years ago I used FreeAgent. Then had no reader needs for quite
awhile and didn't move it from box to box. Started mucking around
with VBA and needed answers, saw that Google provided a free reader,
and voila.

Still curious as to how posts can apparently be appearing on Google,
but not elsewhere (I am assuming your not seeing all the free sex
posts that have been appearing in this group of late).

Dunno what Google has done now, but it doesn't sound good. They've
really done more harm than good for newsgroups, ever since taking over
from Deja News, as I see things. That's really a shame.

You might find MesNews to be a good reader that doesn't get a lot of
exposure, if you're thinking about trying new ones.

Good luck...

Does indeed omit all the junk that shows up via Google Groups web
interface. Which of course begs the question: What hole is allowing
messages onto Google without them making it onto Usenet?

Will probably still use Google Groups however, as it is easier than
having to configure clients on every box one uses.

Thanks again for the help.

The most obvious answer is Google itself. They allow the spam in, the other
servers who they are sharing their news with and getting it from have some
kind of filtering enabled which gets rid of the spam.

I'm also accessing through Google Groups, and the question becomes why
Google is not filtering out obvious spam. Their Gmail service does an
excellent job of filtering the garbage, so why not apply it here as
well? There now is an easy spam reporting link next to each post,
which is good, and maybe they're building a database for an automatic
function? I can't see why they wouldn't. The group would be far more
useful and heavier-trafficked if it were cleaned up.

And I see the answer seems to be that Google indeed is phasing out
Groups, as I had heard. The Help group is now closed and archived, and
they seem to have relegated Groups to their worst servers. In
addition, the manual Spam function doesn't seem to do anything.

What seems odd is that the "good" messages from there are propogating
out to usenet, but the spam isn't. Not that I'm complaining.

Interesting, isn't it? I haven't seem spam here, hardly ever, since Microsoft discontinued the newsgroups - if there is lots appearing on Google but it's not getting anywhere else, it would seem that Google is catching it - whether it's also catching other stuff I can't tell, and why Google is showing the stuff to its own users but not to others is a mystery that I have no interest in solving.
