where is the physical .mpp file stored on saving offine in MS Proj

It's saved in an obscure directory. You're not supposed to need to
access it. When you're done with the offline file, reconnect to the
server and save it back.

I'm not aware of the existence of a "save offline" option anywhere in
Project. I'm not a server user though - is this something in Server?

I think it's actually called "work offline", and yes, it is a Project
Server function, which I don't have where I currently work. It's
helpful for working on a schedule at home, or anywhere you can't be
connected to the server. It "checks out" the project on the server so
that no one else can access it read/write, and saves it to an obscure
directory on your system. Then you can work on it at your leisure. When
you are back connected to the server, you save it back to the server,
essentially "checking" it back in.

To all:

It is genenerally in you MY DOCUMENTS folder. It is only used when you are
working offline and not connected to the Server!! It is NOT recommended that
you work offline and then put it back online later. Generally, it is only
for playing 'What If" games on your project that you would not want to save
when you are finished trying different testing. I use it when I'm trying to
optimize my project plan and then when I have the plan the way I want it I'll
go back 'online' and make the appropriate changes.

Jim,

I have to disagree with you. The whole purpose of taking a project
“offline†is so you can make updates while not connected to the server –
exactly has Sarah stated. I am curious why you recommend not incorporating
changes they way it was intended. To do what you described you don’t need to
take anything off line, you would just save the plan as an .mpp file, do your
what-ifs, and then make the changes to the server version without ever taking
it offline.

Joe,

Maybe I didn't make it clear enough then. Yes I know you take it off the
server to make changes. Generally, I only use the SAVE AS if I'm NOT going
to return it to the server. I will do a lot of updates while "Offline" but
not saved until I save it back to the server.

What I refer to as "Offline" is when you take a project off line to play
with and make a lot of "What If" changes and maybe end up screwing the
project plan all up trying different things. In that case I would do a "Save
As" and then maybe pick up with the project the next day or next week but not
to distroy the original until I'm sure what I want to do to the "Production
or Server" project.

Generally you do make changes off line but it might be a few and then you
save it back to the server so as not to loose your changes and have the
server backedup.

Hope I'm clearer on this now.
