which codes?

What's the significant difference between Custom Fields and Custom
Outline Codes? I prefer the Custom Fields because I see words instead
of outline codes, but there must be a good reason for the latter.

Thanks,
Naomi

The biggest difference between the two is that custom enterprise Project and
Resource fields DO NOT show up in the OLAP cube, and are not available in
Portfolio Analyzer views. If you need the data to show up in the OLAP cube,
then you must use a custom enterprise Project or Resource outline code. If
it doesn't matter, then you may feel free to use a custom field with a Value
List. Hope this helps.

Custom Fields allow you to have lists, free text entry, formulas, graphical
indicatiors.
Custom Outline codes just allow a hierachical list (custom fields don't
allow that), and they are put into the OLAP cubes as dimensions (except the
task ones). Also, in PWA, some of the filers are on Outline Codes (if I
remember correctly).

Hi Naomi,

yes there are fairly large differences. Outline codes are used to display
information in a hierachy ( you cant do this with custom fields).
Furthermore, outline codes, by default, will be build within the Portfolio
analyser, custom fields will not ( but you can by 3rd party tools that allow
you to include custom fields into the portfolio analyser).

The big advantage of custom fields is furmlars ( and graphical indicators),
you cannot achieve them in outline codes. I hope that gives you an idea when
to use what :) By the way in Project Server 2007 you only have custom fields
( you can have hierachies on custom fields in 2007)
Hope this helps

thanks all for your great answers.
Marc, you say
By the way in Project Server 2007 you only have custom fields ( you can have hierachies on custom fields in 2007)

So what's going to happen to all my outline codes when we upgrade to
2007?

Thanks
Naomi
