Which fonts can I remove?

D

David Brugge

I like to keep my system sparse, loading only the files necessary for me on a
daily basis.

Office Win 2003 Pro is very generous with the fonts that it installs--giving
me many more than I need or can use or even want. According to the Knowledge
Base, Office 2003 installs nearly 200 font files in addition to the system
fonts.

I don’t recall an option on the installation as to which or how many fonts
are installed.

When I remove those fonts from my system that I do not intend to use,
eventually some action will launch an Office installation dialogue which will
complain that it does not have the proper fonts to install whatever it is
that it is trying to install.

The Program recommends that I use the repair option on my installation CD.
This automatically reinstalls ALL of the fonts.

I generally use the default fonts in MS programs, so it is not a matter of
using a font in a document, uninstalling the font, then trying to reopen the
document.

Which fonts can I safely remove from my system and keep Office 2003 Pro
happy? Also, did I overlook an option to keep my font list trimmed down to
just the essentials?

Hi David,

In Add/Remove Programs in the Windows Control Panel
locate the Microsoft Office 2003 choice and select
[Change]. From there when the Add or Remove Features
choice [x] Advanced options comes up you'll find the
Fonts listing under the 'Office Shared Features' category.
Set that to 'Not Available' state to minimize a number of
the fonts.

A few fonts are tied to other optional install features such
as the Wizards and Templates or Web Page layouts and themes
rather than a separate entry.
