white box with red x help?

I just recieved a ppt file that has numerous white boxes with a red x where an image should be. PPT 2002 on an xp machine. Am I missing a filter or was the source file created in a way that the photos were not stored in the ppt file but were linked? ( I didn't think you could do that in PPT.)
Thanks

Hi,

The link Michael posted is mainly about *big* red x's across the screen. If
you get one appear at any time, do NOT save the file or you could
permanently save some sort of error into the file. If you must save, save it
as something else so you have a back up.

If it is little red x in the top left corner of a graphic box, with a
couple of other tiny diagrams, it could be a link to an image that has gone
missing.

In addition to the stuff about Red X in the FAQ you were referred to, later
versions of PPT do now use the same red x icon for missing linked pictures
as for other display problems (they used to be different, which was, IMO,
more useful in identifying the problem).

Which answers your question long way 'round: you can link to external
picture files. And if you do, it's nearly a sure thing that the links will
break if you move the PPT file hither and yon.

Try downloading the FixLinks demo at http://get.pptools.com
Free, no obligation. Use its Report function on your presentation - that
should give you more info about the problem pictures.
