The symptoms you describe sound like video card problems.
Try replacing it.

Video cards and the associated driver would be the first
focus. The easiest way to determine video card problems is
to swap it out with a known good one. Defective cards
happen more often than most realize. Try that, and I think
you will find your white lines will disappear.

Just updating the driver might help, but I can confirm that this is a known
annoyance (especially with TIFFs) even with a good card and updated driver.

if it is a known problem, is there a known fix for it? or
is it just another thing that we have to put up with
because there arent enough fixes?

if this is a known issue then is there a known fix?
how can i go around this?
i dont have time to waste time because of word. i buy it
so i can have errorfree software. ok a few here and there
but this error disables me from reading the text and
pictures!!!!

thanks

It's one of those known problems that no one is willing to take
responsibility for, I suspect. Microsoft's answer is basically that Word
taxes the graphics driver harder than most apps; other apps can of course
display TIFFs without all that striping, but they're not trying to keep
track of all sorts of text formatting at the same time. Perhaps someone more
graphics-savvy than I will have a better answer; I use graphics seldom
enough that I just put up with it as long as the graphics print properly. If
I were seeing a problem with text (as I did when an under-specced system was
trying to cope with Word 97), I would be more concerned.
