Who are Status Reports designed for?

This may sound like an elementary question, but are Status Report only
for submittal from team members to project managers or can anyone send
anyone a status report concerning a project?

Say I'm the PM for a project and I receive status reports from the
team members.

Can I then in turn send a consolidated status report to the Project
Sponsor, perhaps my boss, even if they don't play the PM role?

Status Reports are intended for use by any manager who needs text-based
information from resources, from executives down to team leaders. To
forward Status Report responses to someone else via e-mail, refer to the
