Whole document reformatted instead of just the selection

When I change any text or style item when using word in Office 2003, the
whole page changes instead of just the item chosen. Clicking ctrl + z
corrects this. I have found a solution for word 2002 at
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Formatting/WholeDocumentReformatted.htm

but it does not work for me as there seems to be no method of cancelling
auto update style. Can anyone tell me how to do it in Office 2003?

Format - Styles & Formatting. Right-click on the selected style (probably
Normal), and choose Modify. In the Modify Style dialog box, remove the check
next to Automatically update, and place a check next to Add to template.
Then click OK. Then hold down the Shift key, and click File - Save All.
