why am I being offered a back-up dvd with my order

I am about to order microsoft office ultimate and have 2 questions!

On the checkout page I am offered a back-up dvd, what is it and should I
purchase it as well?

I am also being offered an extended download service, I understand the
concept of what it is, but I don
t understand how it would benefit me. Once I purchase a product I thought
that I could always go to product order history and redownload my purchased
product at anytime if I needed to, am I wrong, should I order the extended
download service as well?

I don't want to regret getting or not getting either of these items.
Please explain as much as you can about one or the other...or both questions!
I appreciate any and all of your suggestions, advice, and or input!

Thanks,
Lauren

You would probably be advised to purchase direct from eg amazon.com, its
cheaper & you get the cd/dvd

If you download from MS & purchase the key online without a backup cd/dvd
you are unlikely to be able to reinstall in the event of sys failure

I am not aware of Microsoft doing this. Other companies, such as Digital
River do, when you purchase a program and then download the purchase.
Digital River allows you to re-download the purchase for a limited time {I
recall 30 days) unless you purchase the extended download service to extend
the re-download time. They also offer a alternate of purchase of a backup
CD/DVD if you do not want to purchase the extended download period or
perhaps have a slow connection and just want the disk shipped to you.
Digital River is a software delivery service for a number of companies such
as Symantec. If you choose, you could purchase one of these extras. I would
not purchase both.

Thanks for your advice! I went ahead and ordered the extended download
service and I am going to copy the file I downloaded to a cd-r. For anyone
else who reads my previous post, please go ahead and reply, I'm sure other
people have the same question from time to time!
Thanks again DL!

You did the right thing but I think you'll need a DVD or more than one
CD-R.

PLEASE DO NOT LOSE THE KEY! I suggest entering it into a text file and
copying that file to the same CD-R(s) or DVD as the downloaded file.
