Why am I seeing paragraph symbols as I hit return?

I must have hit some combination of keys, but now even when I reboot and
start word I get these paragraph symbols each time I hit enter. Is this
formatting info and how do I get back to normal??

This is the display of formatting characters and is toggled with either
CTRL+* (CTRL+SHIFT+8) or by means of the Pilcrow button ¶ on the toolbar. It
can often be useful to see these characters.
