Why an I unable to insert a picture from file?

I have been inserting pictures from files for years. Now, suddenly, if I try
to do this the program freezes. When I control, alt, del to shut the program
down, it shows two of the same office document running, although I only
opened one. Also, if I try open a file from somewhere other than my
documents, as soon as I click on the down arrow to access other files, the
program freezes. This only happens when I am running Word 2002, not when I
am searching for files using explorer, etc. I have recently loaded
Frontpage, though this problem did not coincide with the download. I am
running XP on a Pentium 4.

Now may not be the time to learn Regedit.
I suggest you use a .reg file already done for the purpose.

http://patch-info.de/WinXP/Downloads/KB908531_Share-To-Web.zip

Unzip it, extract the .reg file to a folder, right-click it and select
Merge and confirm when asked.

numerous people have posted the problem with opening or saving files in
office applications like Word, Excel after applying Microsoft security patch
KB908531

Microsoft posted these instructions. I tried them but cannot understand step
6. How does one actually enter a data value of "1" ? See step 6 - Do you
right click on it or what? If I right click on that large entry in step 5 I
just get choices like binary data etc. which doesn't make sense. How do you
actually do it? Is it actually just showing a value of "1"
Thanks
1. Log on to the computer with an account with administrator privileges.
2. Click the Start button and then click Run.
3. Type Regedit and then click OK.
4. Navigate to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Shell
Extensions\Cached
5. Right-click "Cached", point to New, click "DWORD Value", and then enter:
{A4DF5659-0801-4A60-9607-1C48695EFDA9} {000214E6-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}
0x401

6. Set the Data of this value to 1
7. Close the Registry Editor.
