Why are attached pictures too big to view after file opened?

When I open pictures sent as attached files, they are too big on my screen
and can't be viewed. Is there a setting I should change? This happens with
all pictures from anyone, even those that are smaller files.

They probably *are that big, open them with an image editing program and
look at the image dimensions.
IrFanview (freebie) would be a good tool...and will allow you to easily
resize them if needed - keeping a copy of the original of course.
