Why are dots and strange figures appearing in my document?

I was working on a Word document last night. When I returned to it this
morning, it had strange box-looking figures around words and dots between
each word. What happened? How can I fix this?

First guess would be that Non-Printing Characters as in view.
Use Ctrl+Shft+8 or the ¶ icon to toggle the view of these.
