why are files opening twice?

When I use Word and Excel, my files keep opening twice. This causes a
problem, especially when I have the documents password and edit protected so
instead of having to enter a password twice to view and then to also edit, i
have to enter it four times.

It looks like when you saved the document you also saved the "NEW
WINDOW" of the document.

I suggest open one of the documents then immediately close one of the
windows by clicking on X icon. Save the document and Close Word.

Now start Word again, and try to open this saved document to see if it
still opens 2 documents.

Do the same in Excel.

You will have to do this in all the documents manually as there is no
automatic way to do it unless you know a thing or two about macros.

How are you opening the files? If you are opening the files outside
the application (other than using File/Open) then it sounds like the
file associations may have the file name represented twice ("%1")
which instructs Windows to open the file twice.

To recreate your file associations, go to Start/Run and run the
following:

winword /r
excel /regserver

Note the space before the forward slash.
