Why are my template's margins changed?

I have created a Word template with margins set to Left=1.8cm and right=1.5cm.
My problem is that whenever I create a new document using that template it
always defaults to the standard Word margin size (i.e. 3.17cm for both left &
right).
Can anyone explain how I can get my template margins to be recognized?

Please describe exactly what steps you use to create a new document from this
template. Also, which version of Word are we discussing?
